WSOU to air special music, public affairs programming for Memorial Day weekend

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — WSOU 89.5 FM, the student-run radio station of Seton Hall University, will air special programming for the Memorial Day weekend. Highlights include flashbacks of classic metal songs and an interview with political commentator and celebrated Washington insider Cokie Roberts.

WSOU kicked off Memorial Day this morning, May 27, with weekend-long “30 Years of Metal Flashbacks.” As 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the station’s current metal format, the flashbacks spotlight the bands that helped shape WSOU and the loud rock music scene over the past three decades. Featured bands include Metallica, Queensryche, Soundgarden, Deftones, Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, System of a Down and Incubus, among many others. Deep and forgotten tracks as well as major hits and fan favorites will be aired as part of the “30 Years of Metal Flashbacks.” The flashbacks will be featured through Monday evening. In addition to the flashbacks, Monday’s music programming will include patriotic metal songs and a moment of silence in memory of those who died defending our nation.

“The flashbacks are going to be a real treat for our listeners,” program director Holly Fitzpatrick said in a press release. “We will be playing some bands that were mainstays on WSOU back in the day but haven’t been heard on the station in a while. Our 30th anniversary gives us the opportunity to celebrate our past and explore how metal has evolved since 1986.”

On Friday, Saturday and Monday, listeners to 89.5 FM will also have the chance to win tickets to Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor. All ticket winners will be entered for the opportunity to win a season pass for the 2016 Stone Pony Summer Stage.

WSOU’s news and public affairs programming will also be focusing on Memorial Day. “Veterans Now,” the station’s weekly show dedicated to the issues facing America’s military veterans, presents its annual Memorial Day remembrance with a special focus on veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Veterans Now” airs Saturday at 7:30 a.m. on 89.5 FM.

At 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Cokie Roberts will be the guest on “Thank God for Monday with Brother Greg Cellini.” For more than 40 years, Roberts has covered Washington politics for ABC News, NPR and in her weekly syndicated column. She will be discussing her new book, “Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington,” about the role of women in American history, and Memorial Day. Roberts is also the author of “Founding Mothers,” “Ladies of Liberty” and “We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters.”
