Barnes Reid selected to Newark Hall of Fame

IRVINGTON, NJ – Barnes Reid, the Irvington High School girls track and field head coach, will be inducted into the Newark Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 17.

In May, Reid was inducted into the IHS Athletics Hall of Fame.

Reid attended Barringer High School from 1966-69; Essex County College from 1969-71; and Seton Hall University from 1971-73 where he earned a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education.

His teaching experience includes:

  • Newark Board of Education 1974-1979

  • Irvington Board of Education 1979-2013

Retired July 1, 2013

  • First African-American Health and Physical Education Teacher hired by Irvington Board of Education 1979.
  • 2009 selected as Governor’s Teacher Recognition Recipient Award.
  • 2013 Recipient and honoree of The Irvington NAACP Chapter Awards for distinguished service as teacher and track coach
  • 2013 State of New Jersey Senate And General Assembly Joint Legislative Resolution honoring, saluting and paying tribute to Reid as a highly esteemed member of his community for meritorious record of service, leadership and commitment.
  • 39 years as a track coach for the Irvington Board of Education.

  • Recipient of 7 State Championship Rings
  • Recipient of 1 National Championship Ring (Shuttle Hurdle Relays)

  • Former School Record holder 400m dash
  • Second-place finish 400-meter dash New Jersey Senior Olympics (65-69 age group) September 2018.
