IRVINGTON – The Irvington High School girls’ varsity basketball team returns five players from a team looking to surpass last year’s five-win total. Those returnees will be the starters for head coach Rashawnah French’s team.
French highlighted the players’ strengths. Jakiyah Martin, a senior point guard, brings speed and good defense. Jasmine Williams, a senior center, will provide muscle on the inside and some big rebounds. Atonie Johnson, a senior, provides energy and aggressiveness with her athleticism. Jessica Washington, a junior, will add a lot with her knowledge of the game and shooting prowess. Rhoda Aygemang, a junior, has added some strength to her game, along with being a good defender.
French also said the Lady Blue Knights have some newcomers who are learning the system and will hopefully provide immediate contributions.
The Blue Knights open the season against Livingston on Friday, Dec. 18, at Livingston at 7 p.m. in a
Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division, which is third-highest of the five divisions of the conference.
French is cautiously optimistic this season. The Blue Knights’ home opener is Tuesday, Dec. 22, against Bloomfield at 4 p.m. in divisional play.
“These are two tough teams to open up against, but we are looking forward to the challenge and a good season,” said French. “Although on paper we have what looks like an older team, they are still learning the game and looking better each and every day.”
