NUTLEY – Matt Schettino, a sophomore, scored 25 points, including hitting four 3-pointers, to lead the Nutley High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 47-44 win at Millburn on Jan. 30.
Will Montgomery, a senior, had nine points with two 3-pointers and freshman Marty Higgins had six points for the Raiders, who improved to an 8-6 record.
In earlier action, Devin White, a senior, scored 14 points; Montgomery had 12 points and senior Geoff Bevere had 11 to lead the Raiders to a 47-39 win over West Essex on Jan. 26. Higgins scored six points on two 3-pointers and senior Antonio Olivo and Schettino each had two points for the Raiders, who outscored West Essex, 18-8, in the fourth quarter to win it.
The Raiders then lost a heartbreaking 50-49 decision to Bloomfield at home on Jan. 29.
NHS received the No. 22 seed in the 70th Essex County Tournament and will host No. 23 West Essex in the second preliminary round on or by Feb. 6.
