NEWARK, NJ — NJ Transit is beginning the installation of new and improved ticket vending machines at several locations systemwide, according to a May 5 press release. Fourteen new machines will be phased in, replacing older machines at bus, light rail and rail stations. This is the second phase of an expanded pilot program which saw great success in Edison, as part of NJ Transit’s ongoing contract with Conduent to modernize fare payment systems and enhance the customer experience.

“Advancing technology initiatives to improve the customer experience has been a core objective since my arrival. These new ticket vending machines are yet another example of how we’re fulfilling that mission,” NJ Transit President and CEO Kevin Corbett said. “In addition to being fully ADA-accessible and offering more purchase options, they make purchasing tickets faster, easier and more convenient for our customers.”

“We are excited to offer our customers today’s latest technology by providing the ability to pay with their phones,” Senior Vice President and CFO William Viqueira. “This improvement and the other features will make transactions faster and more convenient for our customers.”

The new machines have improved features making them quicker and easier for customers to use and they are fully ADA accessible. NJ Transit customers will have the capability to purchase tickets using contactless cards and mobile wallet applications and will no longer need to insert debit/credit cards into the machine. The machines also have improved functionality, with faster printers and new displays providing customers with important travel information and advisories.

After installation is complete, an assessment of the 14 new machines will be made before NJ Transit continues the rollout/replacement of 24 more machines.
