ORANGE, NJ — Police Director Todd Warren and Chief of Police Vincent Vitiello commend Orange police detectives on removing another weapon off of the streets of the city of Orange, according to a Feb. 17 press release.
On Feb. 16, members of the Orange Street Crimes Gang and Narcotics Task Force were seeking an individual possibly in possession of a handgun in the area of Hickory and Taylor streets.
Detectives observed Khalil Stewart walking eastbound on Taylor Street. Stewart, who has allegedly been involved in recent gang violence, began to walk away from the police officers. The detectives observed Stewart kneeling down and placing what they believed to be a handgun underneath a porch stairway in the 100 block of Taylor Street.
According to police, further investigation uncovered an H&R model-649 black-and-brown .22-caliber handgun loaded with six hollow-point rounds. Stewart was placed under arrest.
“This arrest is another message to criminals that our law enforcement officers are on the job, working to make our city safe for law-abiding citizens,” Orange Mayor Dwayne Warren said.
