SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, located at 432 Scotland Road in South Orange, will host several educational programs in December, including two with speakers who will discuss different aspects of Israel’s history.

  • On Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 12:15 p.m., Rabbi Daniel Cohen will lead a free lunch and learn program on “American Judaism and Demographics: Where Are We and Where Do We Go from Here?” Cohen will discuss the changing face of the American Jewish community, how the Jewish community can be more inclusive and the challenges to American Judaism in the foreseeable future. The program is co-sponsored by PrimeConnection, TSTI’s group for mature adults, and includes lunch. Seating is limited and advance registration is required by Wednesday, Nov. 28. Visit https://www.tsti.org/calendar/class-lunch-learn to sign up.
  • On Friday, Dec. 14, the public is invited to attend the Shabbat Scholar & Supper with guest speaker Robert Watson, an award-winning author, professor, historian and analyst, who will present “Harry Truman and the Founding of Israel” during a community dinner. Watson has been the editor and a board member for several scholarly journals, has served on the boards of nonprofit organizations including the Harry Truman Foundation and was the co-founder of the annual Truman Legacy Symposium. The evening service, open to all, is at 6 p.m., followed immediately by dinner with Watson. Admission is charged for dinner. To register, go to https://www.tsti.org/calendar/dinner-with-scholar-dr-robert-watson.
  • On Sunday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m., the Israel Involvement Committee will host published author Itzhak Brook, a speaker for the Israeli Embassy in the United States. Brook will present the historical perspectives and the long-term impact of the Six-Day War and Yom Kippur War on Israeli society and the peace process, and will take questions after his talk. The event is free and open to all; light refreshments will be served. Reservations may be made at https://www.tsti.org/calendar/israel-programs or by email to thorwitz@tsti.org. Brook served as a battalion physician during the Yom Kippur War and authored “In the Sands of Sinai: A Physician’s Account of the Yom Kippur War,” which recounts his personal experiences during that time.
