NUTLEY – The Nutley High School varsity wrestling team, under first-year head coach Mike DiPiano, swept three matches as they hosted the annual Gift of LIfe Duals on Saturday, Jan. 16.
The Raiders defeated Union City, 45-31; Robbinsville, 33-31; and Garfield in the finals, 36-30, to improve to a 9-2 record.
Senior Saul Abreu had two huge pins in both the Robbinsville and Garfield wins that sealed the victories for the Raiders. Darwin Pena, Rob Duxbury, and Louis Long all went 3-0 on the day.
The annual Gift of Life Duals is an event that brings awareness to organ donation. DiPiano’s father, Mike DiPiano Sr, is an organ donation recipient. DiPiano Sr. is a former St. Benedict’s Prep legendary wrestling coach.
