ORANGE – Monte Irvin Giants Baseball accomplished many feats during the 2016 summer season –  from winning the Monte Irvin Giants Wood Bat Classic at Monte Irvin field to being runner-up in the Suburban High School League to opening eyes at the July 4th Wood Bat Showcase in Washington, DC.

A huge congratulations to the Monte Irvin Giants 19U team – and to coaches John Boykin and Jason Rodriguez – for a successful tournament showing at the Monte Irvin Giants 19U Wood Bat Classic held July 29-31 in Orange. The Giants beat defending champion Jersey City Sharks by a score of 4-0. On the field, Denzel Faniel doubled and scored, and Darryn Stewart and Al Diaz each singled and scored. However, the championship game MVP was Giants pitcher Jonathan Toribio, who pitched a complete game, allowing no runs over seven innings, while scattering five hits, walking two and striking out six.

The Monte Irvin Giants High School team also made it to the championship game of the Suburban League before losing to In the Zone Baseball Academy by a score of 5-3 on August 1 in Chester. Monte Irvin had a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning when ITZ erupted for five runs, helped by a couple of Giant errors. Joshua Fields blasted a two-run homer in the first and Disan Singleton doubled and scored in the third for the Giants.  Jason Juarez pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out seven over seven innings.

Finally, over the July 4th weekend, the Giants college team participated in a Round Robin Wood Bat event held at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Washington, D.C.  Monte Irvin went 2-2 over the weekend, but played exceptional baseball, losing twice to the Black Barons  – one of the top teams in the Mid-Atlantic region – by scores of 2-1 and 5-3. As a result of their play in D.C., Monte Irvin was invited to a seven-day national tournament the very next week in Birmingham, Ala.  The tournament committee even offered free round-trip transportation.  However, because of short notice, the Giants were not able to make the trip.

Looking ahead to next season, the Giants will again participate in the high school summer league, the July 4th event at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in D.C. and the John Young Urban Baseball Classic July 17-23 in Atlanta.  The Giants are seeking sponsors to help defray cost for the 2017 events.  For more information, please visit migiants20.weebly.com or contact Wally Boyett at 908-316-5736.
