IRVINGTON, NJ — An early morning motor vehicle stop led to the arrests of two suspects on narcotics and weapons charges by Essex County sheriff’s officers.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated in a Nov. 27 press release that uniformed officers in a marked vehicle from his department’s Patrol Division were passed by an Infiniti sedan with a defective tail light on Ellis Avenue in Irvington shortly before 2 a.m. on Nov. 27.

“As the car passed by, our officers conducted a computer check of the vehicle which revealed that the owner, Yasmiyn French, 25, of Newark, had her driving privileges suspended and that she was wanted on multiple warrants issued by the Irvington and Newark municipal courts,” Fontoura said.

The sheriff’s officers approached the Infiniti on foot and ordered that the illegally tinted windows be lowered, according to the release.

“With the windows rolled down our officers detected the odor of raw marijuana emanating from the suspect vehicle and Ms. French, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, was ordered out of the car,” Fontoura said. “Ms. French’s handbag was also located in the car and it was found to contain 22 plastic vials of cocaine, a small amount of marijuana and drug-processing materials. In addition, a fully loaded and defaced, .35 caliber Taurus revolver was discovered and confiscated from the car’s glove box.”

Also riding in the car with French was Erick Majette, 24 of Newark, who allegedly repeatedly hindered the investigation by giving the officers a false name.

French was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and one count each of the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a defaced weapon, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was also issued motor vehicle summonses for illegally tinted windows, driving while suspended and careless driving.

Majette, who frequently uses the alias Kasson Parker, was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a defaced weapon, possession of CDS and possession of drug paraphernalia. Majette was also found to be the subject of two outstanding warrants for lewdness and aggravated assault.

French and Majette were lodged at the county jail while the await a bail hearing.
