Education without fear in the 21st century

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair Cooperative School will host Pulitzer Prize-winning author Katherine Ellison on Monday, March 15, at 7 p.m. Ellison will explain how a progressive education is a joyful and rigorous preparation for success and fulfillment in a rapidly changing world in this free talk.

Against the backdrop of a national debate about educational standards and assessment, parents seeking a solution to test-centric schools are re-discovering the experiential and collaborative successes of the progressive classroom. Ellison is the co-author of “Loving Learning: How Progressive Education Can Save America’s Schools.” She will describe how progressive education, grounded in a century-old tradition and supported by cutting-edge neuroscience, is poised to create the innovators, problem solvers and critical thinkers who will thrive in the 21st-century economy.

“I am thrilled and honored that Katherine Ellison is coming to the Co-op. ‘Loving Learning’ showcases the best of what progressive schools have to offer, so much of which I recognize here at the Co-op,” MCS Head of School Namita Tolia said in a release. “Every day at our school and at progressive schools across the country, children and teachers are constructing meaning, exploring messiness, engaging in fieldwork, building things and cultivating relationships. Ellison is a perfect ambassador for a network of child-centered and exciting programs that reflect the Co-op’s traditions and its future.”

Montclair’s own Watchung Booksellers is partnering with the Co-op to make copies of “Loving Learning” and other Ellison titles available for purchase at the event. Admission is free and you can reserve your ticket for the evening at MCSKatherineEllison.eventbrite.com.
