EAST ORANGE, NJ — On Aug. 6, East Orange student Malachi Lewis received a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music before a celebratory concert. He is a drummer.
The Berklee City Music Scholarship Concert was emceed by Kameron Whalum, a member of Bruno Mars’ band The Hooligans; the scholarship presentation came at the end of Berklee’s Aspire: Five-Week Summer Performance Program, which included 89 students attending on Berklee City Music Summer Scholarships.
Scholarship recipients were all participants in Berklee City Music, a nonprofit organization that delivers high-quality contemporary music education instruction to youth from underserved communities at no or low cost.
Lewis, a drummer, is one of nine four-year, full-tuition scholarship recipients from the college and Berklee City Music.
