WEST ORANGE, NJ – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Sept. 9, the Seton Hall Prep varsity football team played its first home game at Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field against Don Bosco Prep. The Pirates dropped a tough 21-13 decision.

Don Bosco opened the scoring with 2:52 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. On the second play after receiving the kickoff, senior quarterback Cameron Carti hit senior wide receiver Andrew Perez over the middle for a 83-yard scoring pass. Junior placekicker Zach Hoban added the extra point to tie the score at 7-7 with 2:05 left in the first quarter. That is the way the score remained until 4:22 left in the third quarter when Hoban kicked a 20-yard field goal to give SHP a 10-7 lead.

Don Bosco took a 14-10 lead, scoring a touchdown on the last play of the third quarter. Don Bosco extended the lead to 21-10, scoring a touchdown with 6:44 left in the fourth quarter. SHP closed out the scoring when Hoban kicked a 42-yard field goal to make the final 21-13 with 2:08 left. The field goal tied a school record. In 2006, Chris Cherami kicked a 42-yard field goal against Columbia.

SHP statistics: Carti was 17-22 for 285 yards and one touchdown. Perez had four catches for 124 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back/wide receiver Kyle Monangai had four receptions for 86 yards while sophomore tight end Dominic Busby had four catches for 71 yards. On defense, senior safety Anthony Algieri had 15 tackles; and junior linebacker Jonathan Alvarado had 11 tackles, one sack, and one fumble caused. West Orange resident/junior linebacker Vincent Henrich had five tackles and senior defensive back Quentin Phanord also had five tackles.

Next game: The Pirates will visit Paramus Catholic on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. Paramus Catholic is 1-1 after losing to DePaul, 35-14, in Wayne on Sept. 8.
