West Orange Recreation Department offers fall programs

WEST ORANGE – The West Orange Recreation Department is offering several upcoming fall programs.

  • Mity Mites Football and Cheerleading, grades K-1 – This program will be held on Monday evenings at the Tarnoff Gym at West Orange High School.  These two separate programs introduce the fundamentals of football and cheerleading in a clinic environment.  The building of the fundamentals leads into controlled games where they players and cheerleaders will be able to display the skills they have developed.
  • Junior Division Flag Football and Cheerleading, Grades 2-3. Practices begin in mid-September and games will begin in early October for both programs.  Cheerleading practice will be held on Monday evenings at Washington School.  Flag Football practices will be scheduled based upon field and coach’s availability. Traditionally, practices have been held on weekday evenings.  Games will be held on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. at Suriano Stadium at West Orange High School.
  • Boys Fall Lacrosse Clinic, Grades 3 through 8. The clinic will be held on Sunday evenings at Suriano Stadium at West Orange High School from 6 to 8 p.m., starting Sept. 18. The clinic will be led by WOHS varsity head coach Peter Tourian with assistance from various other lacrosse coaches and players.
  • Girls Fall Lacrosse Clinic,  Grades 3 through 8. This clinic will be held on Sunday afternoons at the Edison School Field from 3 to 5 p.m., beginning Sept. 18. The clinic will be conducted by Kailee Beal with assistance from various other lacrosse coaches and players.
  • Travel Basketball Tryouts, Grades 3 through 8. All players must register prior to the tryout to be permitted to tryout. The tryout dates will be in early October.   Full information regarding the tryout dates and locations will be distributed once they have been confirmed.
  • Sports Conditioning Program, Grades 3-12. Back for another season is the Sports Conditioning Program led by Michael Marini.  The program will be held at the Kelly School on Monday evenings from Oct. 17 through Nov. 28.  The session forthird through sixth grades will be from 6 to 7 p.m. and the seventh through 12th grade session will be from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.
  • Senior Division Flag Football, Grades 4 and 5. Practices will begin in mid September and the games will begin in early October.  Games will be played on Wednesday evenings at Suriano Stadium at West Orange High School.
  • Travel Volleyball Team Tryouts, Girls Grades 6 through 8.  The Recreation Department sponsors a competitive volleyball team that competes against neighboring communities in the Suburban Volleyball League. Tryouts are held Wednesday, Aug. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; and Friday, Sept. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. First round of cuts will be after the Sept. 1 tryout and final cuts will be made after the Sept. 2 tryout.  Athletes will be expected to attend all tryout dates if they are asked to return after their initial tryout.  Girls are required to have sneakers, knee pads and a bottle of water at the tryouts.  Practice schedule for the team will be distributed once the team has been selected.  The season runs from early September through late October.  If there are any attendance concerns, they must be reported via e-mail to recreation@westorange.org.
