EAST ORANGE – With the summer coming to a close in a few weeks, East Orange-based Promoting Progress for Youth has announced its upcoming events that will lead into the start of football season.

“We already have had a couple basketball tournaments with our sixth grade and eighth grade teams that had the opportunity to play in various summer tournaments from Baltimore to New York City,” stated PPY President Tyrone Miles. “We have a few events where they will be playing in, starting with our annual Harry James Summer Jam featuring the Youth Summer Basketball League Championships on Aug. 20 (at Elmwood Park). Our Elite team has been playing in The McKay Park Summer Youth Basketball League in Englewood where they have recently played at Watsessing Park for the Championship.”

The PPY Panthers will close out the summer basketball season with Music Festival that is being sponsored by Third Ward Councilman Ted Green on Aug. 20 at Elmwood Park. “There will be a concession stand serving all your favorite snacks and cold drinks,” said Miles.

PPY has also been preparing for the upcoming football season since the middle of July. They are  currently preparing for the Second Annual Garden State AYF Football Jamboree at Watsessing Park on Aug. 27. “We are excited to be a part of the Garden State American Youth Football Conference for the second season,” said Miles. “We open our season on Sept. 11 in the Battle of the Oranges when we face off against Orange Recreation Junior Tornadoes.” The Panthers will also face the Cardinals of Silk City the following week. Both games are home at 10 a.m. at Paul Robeson Stadium in East Orange. “We will look to have a great season this year as we try to repeat as conference champions and possibly make it through the regional playoffs and play for the National Championship in Florida,” Miles said.

The Panthers are looking to unveil a few new surprises that help everyone keep up with their games and events. “Stay tuned to our Facebook Fan Page where all the updates will be,” Miles stated. “You can follow us at www.facebook.com/Promoting-Progress- for-Youth-Inc for all our scores, news and updates. We are also still accepting registration for the season at our practice site in Elmwood Park in East Orange. We are practicing every day until the beginning the school year.”

For more information, call Miles at 201-341-3933.
