IRVINGTON, NJ – Irvington High School girls basketball star Tiara Mahorn scored her 1,000th career point to lead the Blue Knights to a 71-31 win at Weequahic, Friday, Feb. 22, in the team’s final regular-season game.

Mahorn, a senior, needed 27 points and finished with 32 points, along with nine steals, eight assists and five rebounds. She scored her 1,000th point around the 3-minute mark of the third quarter.

The win capped an undefeated season in the Super Essex Conference-Freedom Division as the Blue Knights finished a remarkable 14-0 in the division to win the divisional title. It also marked the team’s  fifth straight win and 17th win in the last 18 games to improve to a 20-6 overall record.

IHS first-year head coach Noel Segarra was ecstatic for Mahorn.

“I cannot be more proud of Tiara,” said Segarra. “She joins a very small elite list of 1,000 point scorers in IHS history. The greatest thing about this is that she was able to score her 1,000 points in just two seasons.”

Senior guard Briana Lee had 19 points, eight steals, eight assists and eight rebounds; junior gaurd Celine Ceasar had 10 points, five steals and five rebounds; junior center Aniyah Massey had five points and 10 rebounds and senior forward Herbina Exume had 10 rebounds for the Blue Knights.

IHS started the season 3-0 before losing its next three games to move to 3-3. The Blue Knights then won 12 in a row. The win streak ended with a 70-35 loss to third-seeded West Orange in the Essex County Tournament first round (round of 16) Feb. 9. IHS was the No. 14 seed.

The Blue Knights hope to make a good run in the postseason. IHS, seeded fifth, will host No. 12 seed Millburn in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 state tournament Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. The winner will face either No. 4 seed Carteret or No. 13 seed Parsippany Hills in the quarterfinals Feb. 28.

Mahorn had 30 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and seven steals and Lee had 25 points with 16 assists, eight rebounds and eight steals in the 79-19 win over St. Vincent Academy, Feb. 19, in Newark. Senior forward Shaquana Lyle and Massey each had seven points; Ceasar had six points with four steals. Exume and sophomore guard Rayonnah Freeman each had two points.
