Our Lady of Sorrows track and field team impresses at St. John the Apostle meet

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The Our Lady of Sorrows track and field team enjoyed an impressive showing at the Second Annual St. John the Apostle meet recently.

There was nothing close about this contest as Saint John’s of Clark pulled out all stops to roll to a convincing win in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions on their home course. Saint Cassian’s school was second and Our Lady of Sorrows was a solid third in a competition that drew 15 schools.

Maudie Grace Lomuscio opened with a second place in the 1,600 meters at the Girls’ 3rd & 4th grades level, just missing the OLS class record by a third of a second. Her counterpart on the boys’ side had a shock when the officials accidently added an extra lap to the 1,600 meters run. He persevered and grabbed fourth with an unofficial school record.

At the 5th & 6th grades level, Emma Torres continued her two-year winning streak with a comfortable 6:42. Seventh-grader Jared Edwards ran 5:45 for a second to round out the scoring in the longest races.

The 800-meter runs were even better. Isabel Sabnekar and Sabina Meister placed second and fourth in the 3rd & 4th Girls’ race, while Alfonso Dunmeyer took third for the boys. Alyma Karbownik was out-leaned at the finish of the 5th & 6th girls’ race to finish second, but Will Spreeman took his third straight boys’ 5th & 6th race in his first season! Oliver Karbownik romped to a win in the 7th & 8th race in 2:31.5, followed in fifth place by Sergio Marian.

The 400 meters was a very favorable event for OLS. It is rare that second-graders get a chance to run against other second-graders and Bella Borde took full advantage, placing second in the girls’ race. Christopher Schmidt went one better, winning the boys’ race in 1:22.03. Joseph Schmidt and Kyle Jules claimed third and fourth in the 3rd & 4th event, and Halle Jules placed second in the 5th & 6th Girls’ race. Fifth grader Max Ince scored second.

OLS has few 100- or 200-meter sprinters, but Oliver Karbownik’s 26.98 was good for fourth in the Boys’ 7th & 8th race, while Kyle Dixon narrowly lost in the Boys’ 3rd & 4th event.

In the field events, the Long Jump is not a strong point for the team, but Alyma Karbonik did place fifth in the Girls’ 5th & 6th jump, while eighth-grader Oliver Karbownik’s 15 feet-6 inch leap placed second. That made him the third-best jumper in OLS’ history. Then fourth-grader Isabel Sabnekar took a surprise fourth at the 3rd & 4th Girls’ competition.

The shot put is one of OLS’ strongest events. Zenya Stewart-Mitchell and Lori Kola placed first and third for the Girls’ 3rd & 4th contest, while Joe Schmidt and Brendan McKeon grabbed second and third for the boys. Parker Hamilton continued his streak, winning the 5th & 6th Boys’ Shot by almost 5 feet.

OLS finished the regular contests with the TurboJav, another of OLS’ strong event. Mary Kola easily won the second grade event and Maudie Grace Lomuscio placed second at the 3rd & 4th level. Kyle Dixon broke his own class record while winning the boys’ event. Emma Torres placed second in the Girls’ 5th & 6th, while Kennedy Moore placed fifth in the Girls’ 7th & 8th event.

Softball is reserved for the little guys. Bella Borde and Mary Kola place first and second for the Girls’ 2nd grade event, while Chris Schmidt won the boys’ competition.

All hands contributed to the relays and this is where those who may not have placed individually did very well. Olivia Ince, Declan Tynan, Edlaine and Wadner Luberisse, Molly Donohue, Zayda Gordon, Stephanie James and Sam O’Hara made important contributions.
