WEST ORANGE, NJ — The Seton Hall Prep lacrosse team opened up its season facing the No. 2-ranked team in the country, Chaminade High School (Mineola, N.Y.), on March 28. The Pirates lost a very tough game 7-6 to the Flyers.
Seton Hall opened the scoring with 9:16 left in the first period when junior Derek Sabel scored an unassisted goal. After Chaminade tied the score at 1-1, junior Jack Merklinger scored to give the Pirates a 2-1 on an assist by senior Alex Ante with 4:01 left.
In the second period, Ante made it 3-1 with 9:25 left and junior Drew Rothman scored on an assist by junior Alex Coakley with 7:43 left to make it 4-1. Chaminade cut it to 4-3 before sophomore Grady Paltos scored on an assist by senior Quinlan Oakes with 3:15 left to make it 5-3. Chaminade cut it 5-4 with 2:09 left before halftime.
In the third period, the Flyers took a 6-5 lead when they scored two goals with 2:27 and 2:12 remaining.
With just :55.7 left, Chaminade made it 7-5. In the fourth period, senior Owen Dunleavy scored with 6:28 left on an assist by Sabel to make it 7-6. Senior goalie Brennan Lyons had 14 saves for the Pirates, while junior Josh Grannum won 7 of 9 faceoffs.
